08/15/20 – PLANE FLIGHT AROUND THE CITY TO PAY TRIBUTE TO THUNDER OVER LOUISVILLE

August 15, 2020. Louisville, KY. – The Kentucky Derby Festival’s tribute to Thunder Over Louisville continues this afternoon with a familiar Thunder sight in the sky. Fans around Louisville will see a plane towing banners flying around the city between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Today would have been the rescheduled date for the 2020 show.

Around 4 p.m., the plane will be towing a banner for LG&E, a 14-year sponsor of the event. Then, around 6 p.m., the banner will be switched out to a “Kentucky Derby Festival” banner. The planes are doing an Expressway flyover. They will circle around the Waterfront area, as well as the connecting expressways of I-264, I-265, I-71, I-65 and I-64.

Other tributes will also continue throughout the day:

  • Fans can tune to 106.9 PLAY, the Official Radio Partner of Thunder, all day to hear their favorite songs from Thunder soundtracks of years past.
  • Wrapping up a week of colorful tributes, the lights on the Big Four Bridge at Waterfront Park will glow in the Derby Festival’s signature colors of teal and pink tonight beginning at sunset.
  • The Festival has created a special “Thunder at Home” section at ThunderOverLouisville.org which includes tips for planning a Thunder party at home, Thunder inspired cocktail and food recipes, coloring pages, Zoom backgrounds and more!

“We look forward to a time when it’s safe for us all to come together again for our favorite Kentuckiana traditions,” said Matt Gibson, Kentucky Derby Festival President & CEO. “Until then, we hope fans will continue to share the Festival spirit, celebrate with family and friends safely at home, and create their own Thunder memories.”

Thunder Over Louisville – the Derby Festival’s Opening Ceremonies – is one of the more than seventy events produced by the Derby Festival in the spring. The event was not able to be held in 2020 due to concerns surrounding COVID-19. Next year’s show is set for April 17.
