Louisville’s Hard Rock Café will be the first to have the Kentucky Derby Festival’s 42nd edition of Pegasus Pins. The pins will be unveiled THURSDAY MORNING at 10:00 a.m. as they are delivered to the restaurant at Fourth Street Live. Hard Rock Café will have the first Pegasus Pins for sale that day.
Started as an awareness campaign for the not-for-profit civic celebration in 1973, the plastic pins are now one of four primary sources of funding the Derby Festival events. It has become a way for the community to have ownership in the Festival and show their pride in the region’s largest celebration.
Since 1956, the Derby Festival has worked to bring the community together in celebration. The Festival is an independent community organization supported by 4,000 volunteers, 400 businesses and civic groups, Pegasus Pin sponsorships and event participation. It entertains more than 1.5 million people in a two- week period and has a local economic impact of more than $127 million. This involvement has made the Festival the largest single attended event in Kentucky and one of the leading community celebrations in the world.
