4/28/2014 – STUDENT ARTISTS HONORED BY DERBY FESTIVAL

WINNERS ANNOUNCED TOMORROW IN 38TH ANNUAL CONTEST

April 28, 2014. Louisville, KY.   – More than 30 young artists will be honored tomorrow night for their winning artwork in the 2014 Kentucky Derby Festival Foundation Student Art Contest presented by the Kentucky School of Art.  The awards ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. at the Kentucky Exposition Center in the South Wing.  This is the first year the event has been held in conjunction with the Republic Bank Pegasus Parade Preview Party.

Hundreds of area students produced original artwork showing their interpretation of Festival events.  The result is an exciting mix of drawings, paintings, collages, mixed media, compositions and prints. Students used watercolor, acrylics, inks, crayons, oil pastels, felt markers or any combination of these to create their original pieces of work.  For the past 38 years, the Festival has offered this contest as a way for local students to showcase their artistry skill.

Entries in the Student Art Contest were judged by arts professionals from the community. The winners in each division will receive a medallion, certificate and a Student Art Contest Winner’s Pin.  First-place finishers will receive a 2014 Kentucky Derby Festival framed poster created by the 2014 Official Poster artists Doreen and Jeaneen Barnhardt and get to ride in the Republic Bank Pegasus Parade.

The original artwork by area students will be on display at the Preview Party beginning at 5:00 p.m., as well as at the Huff Gallery at Spalding University from July 1 – August 1.

Kentucky School of Art at Spalding University is the presenting sponsor of this year’s event.

Since 1956, the Derby Festival has worked to bring the community together in celebration. The Festival is an independent community organization supported by 4,000 volunteers, 400 businesses and civic groups, Pegasus Pin sponsorships and event participation. This involvement has made the Festival the largest single-attended event in Kentucky and one of the leading community celebrations in the world.
