The Pegasus Pin is the community’s primary way to support Kentucky Derby Festival events.  Revenue generated from the pins helps to underwrite (along with corporate sponsorship) the many free events of the not-for-profit Derby Festival, such as Thunder Over Louisville and the U.S. Bank Great BalloonFest.

Started as an awareness campaign for the not-for-profit civic celebration in 1973, the plastic Pegasus Pins are now one of four primary sources of funding the Derby Festival events.  It has become a way for the community to have ownership in the Festival and show their pride in the region’s largest celebration.

The Kentucky Derby Festival, Inc. is a private, not-for-profit civic organization that must raise all its funds privately to produce the annual two-week slate of nearly 70 events.  In addition to support from corporate sponsorship and merchandising royalties, the community actually helps produce the events it enjoys through personal contributions with the Pegasus Pin Program.
